Rex Peebles, Ph.D

Assistant Commissioner, Academic Quality and Workforce, Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board

Rex Peebles serves as assistant commissioner for academic quality and workforce division at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. Peebles will look at how the concept of guided pathways has spread rapidly through community colleges and four-year institutions around the country. The guided pathways model is based on coherent and easy-to-follow college-level programs of study that are aligned with requirements for success in employment and at the next stage of education. Programs, support services, and instructional approaches are redesigned and re-aligned to help students clarify their goals, choose and enter pathways that will achieve those goals, stay on those pathways, and master knowledge and skills that will enable them to advance in the labor market and successfully pursue further education.

Guided Pathways: How Far Can We Go?

Guided Pathways is an interesting term. It is used to denote any number initiatives from helping student’s to fill out FAFSA’s tom prescribing a sequence of courses. Institutions have done a lot of work under the guise of “guided pathways” to help students, but further progress will take unprecedented levels of collaboration among institutions. Individual institutions have come a long way, but we can take students much further down a pathway if we are willing to give up some institutional autonomy. How do we accomplish that?
