Recognition of Outstanding Leadership and Innovation in Nursing Education

Howard College proudly recognizes Manuel Tobias and Martha Alvarez for their exceptional leadership, innovation, and dedication to advancing nursing education.

Manuel and Martha have played a transformative role in expanding and strengthening Howard College's nursing programs. Under their leadership, both the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) and Vocational Nursing (VN) programs have experienced significant growth in student enrollment, including the introduction of additional cohorts to help meet the increasing demand for skilled healthcare professionals.

A key achievement of their leadership is the creation of a seamless transition pathway from the VN program to the ADN (RN) program. This initiative allows students to continue their education without interruption, while simultaneously strengthening the regional nursing workforce pipeline. Their commitment to student success is further reflected in their redesign of curriculum and instructional approaches, placing a strong emphasis not only on content mastery, but also on student support, retention, and overall academic success.

In addition, Manuel and Martha have strengthened Howard College's partnership with Shannon Medical Center through the development of innovative internship opportunities. These programs allow students to earn wages while completing required clinical hours, providing both financial support and invaluable hands-on experience. This partnership not only benefits students but also directly supports local workforce needs in the healthcare community.

Their excellence in nursing education has been recognized through their receipt of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurse Educators, presented by Shannon Medical Center. This prestigious honor celebrates faculty who inspire their students and significantly contribute to shaping the future of the nursing profession.

Manuel Tobias and Martha Alvarez exemplify student-centered leadership, workforce innovation, and meaningful community partnership. Their dedication and vision make them exceptionally deserving of this recognition, and their impact will continue to benefit students, the college, and the broader healthcare community for years to come.
